Its Not About Meat, Its About Feeding the Community
Joe's Butchery is situated in the sunny and stormy Mossel Bay, South-Africa. The owner Joe has had his butchery for 10 years starting it from humble beginnings.
Growing up Joe was an orphan which roamed the streets of their ghettos frequently, but despite his upbringing, he still made a success of himself and is now a serving member of the community. In the 10 years, he has been running the butchery, Joe has set up a soup kitchen, a training program for youths that see a future for themselves in retail and a free tutoring program in mathematics.
The soup kitchen was the brainstorm of Joe's wife Magda. seeing so many children on a Friday night which roam the same streets as her husband. The soup kitchen runs every Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday. To donate to their soup kitchen please refer to the Contact Us section of the website. For the training program, Joe's Butchery works with the local municipality to source the youths, where he teaches the art of butchery for 1-2 years. Being that it is an in-demand career when these blockmen finish their training they have unlimited job opportunities.
A longtime employee, Gladys Groenewald, a single mother of two boys said that without the job Joe gave to her she would not know how to support her family and is truly grateful to Joe's Butchery.
In addition to Joe's community endeavours, the butchery adheres to all state regulations and sells only A-grade meat. Joe's Butchery started small in a corner shop of an outdoor shopping centre has now grown to 10 stores in the Eden district in the Western Cape. The Butchery is part of the community and gives to many of its members a sense of belonging. When you are ever in the Eden District, pop into your nearest Joe's Butchery just to experience the feeling of home.
